Sofa, Wilhelm Kimbel – Square Drop

Sofa, Wilhelm Kimbel

German sofa in the late Empire style, dated around 1830. The furniture was made by cabinetmaker Wilhelm Kimbel (1786-1869) in the furniture factory in Mainz, in Southern Germany. Kimbel often decorated furnitures with sculptural forms. Interesting decorative elements are carved eagles, whose wings transform into the backrest decoration. This type of furniture is called “Adler canapé” in Wilhelm Kimbel’s graphic notebooks. The sofa is made of mahogany, finished with beeswax and upholstered with natural linen. Fully renovated, preserving its natural patina. The sofa is upholstered with fabric also from the back, which allows it to be placed free-standing. This antique piece of period furniture with a modern finish fits perfectly into contemporary interiors.
