When Dowager Queen Juliane Marie founded the Royal Porcelain Factory in 1775, she insisted that the three waves be the factory\u2019s trademark. They symbolize Denmark\u2019s three most important waterways: the Sound, the Great Belt, and the Little Belt. To this day, the waves are painted on the back of every porcelain item. The sand caster (also known as a pounce pot or sander) has a perforated lid that allows for the gentle sprinkling of fine powder onto the paper's surface. The first technique involved sprinkling a small amount of the substance onto clean paper or parchment to remove any greasiness, then gently rubbing the surface. This made the paper smoother and would make the scripted text less susceptible to bleeding in the fibrous texture. The second technique, employed around the late 18th century, involved lightly sprinkling fine sand or ground minerals (such as sandstone or talc) over freshly written text. The powder absorbed excess ink from the surface, significantly speeding up the drying time.
