Danish Empire mahogany mirror, c. 1810 – Square Drop

Danish Empire mahogany mirror, c. 1810

Danish Empire-style mirror. The structure is made of pine, veneered in mahogany with a shellac polish finish matted with beeswax. The cresting is decorated with marquetry (inlay).
The lower mirror pane is in good condition, with slight oxidation, and is likely a later replacement.
The upper mirror pane is original, featuring a Neoclassical painted decoration that depicts an allegorical scene characteristic of the period, drawing inspiration from antiquity.

This Neoclassical scene features a centrally positioned ‘fountain of wisdom,’ depicted as a classical bowl (tazza) with two birds perched on its rim—a motif inspired by ‘Pliny’s Doves,’ symbolizing peace and the soul’s pursuit of knowledge. Seated on either side in a symmetrical, defensive posture are two allegorical female figures (likely representing Minerva or Dea Roma).

In the Empire style, Minerva was among the most frequently depicted figures, as she symbolized not only military strength (represented by the spear) but, above all, wisdom, craftsmanship, and the triumph of reason. Holding their spears vertically and looking outward, they act as guardians of the source, embodying the Empire-style ideal in which military might and wisdom serve to protect culture, harmony, and the state.
