Mid-century Chinese lanterns, 20th century

These lanterns were made in the mid-to-late 20th century and were designed and manufactured as electric lamps from the very beginning. They come ready to use as a decor piece that will instantly transform the character of any room.

The lamp’s structure features original elements from traditional, historic Chinese architecture that no longer serve their original function. The beautifully carved, dark wood at the top draws inspiration from classic motifs and roof designs found on Asian temples. The shade is made of rice paper covered in fragments of traditional Chinese script.

Thanks to the rice paper, the light is soft and diffused. It doesn’t glare; instead, it subtly fills the space with a warm, golden glow. It’s perfect as mood or accent lighting in a living room, bedroom, study, or an elegant hallway, giving the space an intimate yet distinct character.
