A pair of officer hat armchairs – Guan Maoyi, Ming style

The distinctive top bar of the chairs curves upward and sticks out past the side posts. It looks like the winged hats worn by government officials in ancient China, which traditionally showed off high social status, prestige, and power.

The wooden board in the middle of the back is gently curved into an “S” shape. This isn’t just to look nice, it is also a great example of early ergonomics—the shape perfectly fit the natural curve of the human spine.

The seats have built-in panels woven from cane or rattan matting. This traditional method made the seats flexible, comfortable, and breathable, which was especially important in warmer weather.

Ming-style furniture is famous for its simple elegance, clean lines, and the use of clever wooden joints instead of nails. The decorative piece under the seat doesn’t just look good, it also makes the whole chair stronger.
